Can I find communication in places other than discord?

Matrix chat is pretty popular on the fediverse. I don’t have any specific communities to recommend, but I’m sure there’s a suitable one out there.

Too bad Matrix is just terrible.

There isn’t a decent Discord alternative rn

even discord isn’t a decent discord alternative

There’s still IRC. Discord has always just been IRC with additional media embeds and an outer layer of shiny Nerf controls for babies.

What makes it terrible? I’ve been really enjoying it, I actually prefer it to discord even aside from privacy/morality aspects

It freezes a lot, the search is awful, messages just stop loading forcing a restart, verification is a joke

Huh I haven’t tried the search, but otherwise haven’t noticed any of those problems - one of the reasons I like it more than discord is actually how much more responsive and less bloated it is. I use element as a client and a smaller homeserver, but even messaging people from other homeservers it’s been very solid for me. Sorry to hear your experience with it has been worse

Sounds like a home server problem. I host my own and literally have none of the issues.

Are any of you using Stoat or Root right now?

I really want to self host stoat but when I tried a while ago (it was still called revolt) I couldn’t get voip to work

Matrix and irc are where you want to be.

Maybe try SpaceBattles Forums. It’s a bit old school, but there’s a good community and some really good creative writing spaces.

Look up an app called Revolt. It’s like discord but designed with focus on privacy and open sourced development.

If you don’t need an exact 1 for 1, you could try Telegram and Signal. People post qr codes for groups in that app all the time

Revolt/Stoat dropped the ball by not supporting federation and not choosing that from the beginning IMO. It could have been such a huge opportunity if they had built that in from the beginning, I’d drop matrix for it

Revolt has apparently been renamed to Stoat after being sent a cease and desist for the name

that’s such a terrible name choice haha… apparently it’s a cute lil animal, but searching for it, the chat service doesn’t even show up in the search results at all (because well.. it’s a real animal). there’s also already a software called stoat (though it’s a github build metrics viewer app and not a chat app)

but imagine trying to convince people to switch to stoat.. “add me on stoat!”

“add me on stoat!”

“Yeah bro I’m so stoakt!” Huh, that’s almost a better name LOL.

First Riot chat, now Revolt.

Funny how rebelliously flavored chat alternatives that challenge the centralized status quo keep getting put down!

There’s Matrix, XMPP, Delta Chat and IRC. IRC is oldschool and popular, you have channels like on Discord but you can only send text. If you want we can message together or create some group chat. I also looking for people to chat outside Discord. My matrix is @ml0dy:noevil.pl, XMPP mlody@hakier.pl and IRC #zimno on Libera Chat.
